Paris UN COP21 Petitions

The world is watching as climate talks at COP 21 unfold in Paris.  We are seeing intense grassroots mobilizing to send a strong message that we need a universal commitment to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050.

Canada has had a mixed performance in Paris, leading in some ways, including calling for a 1.5 C rise limit, and lagging in others.  You can watch a critique of the likely agreement coming out of Paris with Naomi Klein.

Nonetheless the Canadian Government’s positions have changed dramatically.

KEEP UP THE PRESSURE: SIGN THIS PETITION TO CALL FOR 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY BY 2050.

Our Fast for the Climate colleagues have a strong presence in Paris and urge us to sign

FAST FOR THE CLIMATE PETITION - PLEASE SIGN!

Report on ClimateFast Dec 1st and 6th Events

December 1st, ClimateFast hosted a forum at North York Civic Centre: Global to Local, Climate Impacts and Solutions with four speakers: Connie Sorio of KAIROS speaking on impacts of extreme weather on Pacific Island nations, Caterina Lindman speaking on the financial costs of inaction and on solutions including carbon pricing and eating less meat, Mark Bekkering of the City of Toronto speaking on the Transform TO initiative and what Toronto is doing to reduce emissions, and Rob Shirkey of Our Horizon speaking on the campaign for climate labels on gas pumps and the recent success in North Vancouver.

December 6th PARIS CALLING, we skyped in nine delegates from Paris;  Peter Jones of For Our Grandchildren, Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Claire Martin,  Joy Kennedy of Fast for the Climate, Quaker representative Shelley Tanenabaum, Stu Basden and Ben Donato-Woodger of Toronto350, Paul Beckwith, climate scientist and COP 21 delegate, and David Miller, former City of Toronto Mayor and Executive Director, World Wildlife Fund.  We finished our skype session with Willi Nolan, anti-fracking activist and indigenous grandmother from the Wabenaki territory and had closing comments from Danny Harvey, climate scientist from  U of T.  Danny noted that whatever limitation we might put on temperature rise in terms of our goal, we cannot determine the outcome, we can only determine our actions in reducing carbon, and committed action is very urgent.

(We were not able to tape the day, however for those who want to hear Paul Beckwith speak, check out this interview http://paulbeckwith.net/2015/12/08/paul-beckwith-interviewed-by-nick-breeze-paris-2015/ and Elizabeth May has been posting daily video updates on her facebook page.)
