Make a Presentation to the City Budget Committee Feb 7th or 11th

Your councilors need to know you are concerned about climate action and that you are calling for funding support for the City’s climate action plan, TransformTO!

Come out for a preparation session for budget deputations - or use the information below to prepare your deputation.  A deputation just means speaking at a committee meeting, or submitting your comments in writing.  Every voice counts!

Budget committee hearings are below. Choose one time. It’s recommended to go to Scarborough, North York or Etobicoke locations if you can, as there’s a longer list to speak at City Hall.  If you don’t have time to appear in person, please send a written note.

You can emphasize:

  1. It is important to you that the city take urgent action on climate (share a personal story if you have one, for example if you’ve been impacted by flooding, or are concerned for your children’s future)

  2. It is essential that the city fund the $1.35 million in new and enhanced funding for TransformTO

  3. The city should be looking at ways to put in additional funding for direct programs such as retrofitting buildings, walking, cycling, and better transit. (more info on transit advocacy at: http://www.ttcriders.ca/)

  4. Both capital and operating budgets need to prioritize climate action. This is going to require long -term investment.

  5. The city should be looking at funding options that also further the goals of shifting people to lower carbon footprint activities, for example a vehicle registration tax.

How long is a deputation?

The usual public deputation speaking time is five minutes. However, when the list of speakers is long, the committee can choose to reduce the speaking time. Prepare speaking notes for approximately three minutes. Try to make all the points you want to make in the time that’s allotted.

Will Councillors ask me questions?

Councillors may ask questions following a deputation.
