Join the movement for a fossil fuel free future! Learn about the global campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty and about our campaign for Toronto to endorse the Treaty.
We will need to build a huge movement in order to move City Hall forward on climate action and the phasing out of all dependence on fossil fuels. So join us!

Speakers to include: Tzeporah Berman, Chair, and Seble Samuel, Cities organizer from the international Campaign for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.  This webcast is organized by MobilizeTO, ClimateFast and other groups in the Toronto climate action community.

We are operating on a short timeline. Our aim is to have Toronto council endorse the treaty at the July council meeting (Mike Layton will be introducing a motion). In addition to an endorsement, the motion will ask city council to write a letter to PM Trudeau asking the Canadian government to endorse the treaty and support its passage at the upcoming COP26 UN Climate Change Conference in November 2021.

We need to quickly spread the word as far and wide as possible.

Here is some more about the treaty:

Just as fifty years ago the world successfully negotiated a treaty to defuse the threats posed by the uncontrolled spread of nuclear weapons* the world today needs a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to address the threat posed by fossil fuels. The Paris Agreement makes no mention of fossil fuels, the words oil gas and coal do not appear, so we need a clear statement of understanding that fossil fuels must go.

This Treaty is a big, bold idea calling for unprecedented international cooperation in 3 main areas:

  1. Non-Proliferation – ending all new exploration and production of fossil fuels
  2. Global Disarmament – phasing-out existing stockpiles in line with the 1.5ºC Paris goals
  3. A Peaceful Transition – fast-tracking a just transition for every worker, community and country

The concept of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is beginning to gain significant traction globally. Already hundreds of groups around the world have endorsed the Treaty, including organisations such as 350.org, World Future Council and Friends of the Earth, individuals including Naomi Klein, Bill McKibben, Mary Robinson, 101 Nobel Laureates and even cities including Vancouver and New York City.

Based on the experience of similar multinational treaty efforts, such as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, this proposal will need a groundswell of civil society support around the world to gain traction with governments and diplomats. Here’s how you can help:

If you are unable to attend our launch, please look for our action letter that we will be asking people to send to their local councillors and Mayor Tory in the weeks to come.

While the Treaty is gaining significant support from civil society leaders, policy experts and even some governments, the concept isn’t yet something talked about widely by the broader climate movement and general public. Please help us get the word out.

Please endorse the campaign. Groups and individuals are welcome to sign on!
